Meridian Brothers

with ANCESTOR PIRATAS feat. Davey Blackburn

Time: 9:00PM

Admission: $20 | All Ages

Doors: 8:00PM

Meridian Brothers had so much fun at Anisette in April that they are back in Raleigh all the way from Colombia on Friday, July 14th, joined by ANCESTOR PIRATAS featuring Davey Blackburn of CURIOSIDADES de BOMBRILE, CHÓCALA, and Don Telling’s Island Mysteries.  Be there, and wear yr dancing shoes.  You will not be able to sit still for this one.

Meridian Brothers re-interpret all manners of Latin Tropical styles with a strong psychedelic and experimental sensibility.  Since 1998, under the guidance of band leader Eblis Alvarez, they’ve galvanized their reputation as synthesizers of popular Latin American rhythms, augmented by sampling techniques, elaborate effects processing and idiosyncratic, theatrical vocal styles which channel imaginary characters with both pathos and humor.

ANCESTOR PIRATAS is a cumbia electronic music project of Renzo Ortega, Peruvian, via New York, Carrboro-based artist. He has been performing and recording music for over 30 years, playing dance, political, and love songs in different locations, including museums, art spaces, and D.I.Y. venues in North Carolina, New York, Texas, Chicago, Detroit, Berlin, Lima, and México City. He began his music career in the underground music scene of his native Lima-Perú, performing with the pioneer electronic duo “Cuerpos del Deseo” (1990-1991). Renzo lived in New York for over sixteen years, where he founded the immigrant band R-Tronika (2003-2016); later, in the fall of 2016, he relocated to Carrboro, NC. Renzo is an accomplished visual artist exhibiting in art institutions and Museums and created commissioned public art murals. With Ancestor Piratas, Renzo performs crafted live versions from his music catalog and selected songs that embrace the movement for a world without borders.
