HELTA SKELTA at Neptunes

with Davidians

Time: 9:30PM

Admission: $7 | All Ages

Doors: 8:30PM

Helta continue to fly under the radar of the vast majority of Perth’s gig-going population, because I suppose a lot of people have no taste. I love that they’ve been doing their thing for what, five, six years now, and as much as it might be nice to see a medium-sized room giving their songs the energy they deserve – in my mind Helta’s natural habitat is a packed-out Sunday evening 208 sweat-off. This single is supposed to be a taster for their somewhat delayed second LP, and if you’re a fan of the band from overseas or elsewhere; rest assured- the new songs creeping into their sets strongly indicate that it’s going to be a fucking ripper. For all the bullshit people throw at living in Perth perks like this sure do take the edge off. For those unfamiliar with the band, what you’re looking at is a sort of garage-hardcore punk vibe that’s become more prominently garage-leaning as their discography has progressed. Think EDDY CURRENT, THE VICTIMS, THE SHITTY LIMITS, fuck – maybe even a touch of CAREER SUICIDE early on. These guys have a lot of varied tastes between them, so I won’t attempt to clumsily pigeonhole them further, but you get my drift. The guitars are tight, choppy and bright, the bass and drums pin the beat down with straightforward but rock-solid rhythms and Jon’s vocals have now reached a sort of sardonic deadpan half-sung, half-spoken UK post punk vibe that gives the riffs a brilliantly sneering, mildly threatening counterpoint. – Alex Leech No Exposure Magazine
